Buried Secrets of Barbados...

Life upon earth......back at home at my shop in the Silver Sand area, everything is sweet. The wind and waves have been cranking almost every day from December, it's late February and I get an email from Japanese rider & Journalist Masaya working for Windsurfer magazine. He is arriving in Barbados in a few days and wishes to check out the big waves on Barbados' North shore. This is one of the biggest buried secrets to Barbados; the North Coast of Barbados produces the biggest ride able waves. Once you have a low pressure system producing a solid swell and the trade winds are blowing it action!!

I recruit waterman Russell from Dread or Dead Surf Shop with his Jet Ski and photographers Kenny and I am ready for deAction. It's Thursday and the plan was set in place, leaving logo high waves on deAction Beach on the south Coast to take an hour drive to the North Coast. Man, we were lucky, wind guru prediction was on with wind and waves...Action!!

We arrive, yea man!! We scan the sea from the cliff, there is a white line of waves stretching across the huge bay. We decent down the narrow path through bushes and the rocky cliff. We reach an opening of grass and trees with a small cove as a launching area.

Masaya is hesitant and decides not to venture into these radical conditions. I was feeling the feeling, and it was time for action. Once I push through the dumping shore break, I had to waddle out through the out until being powering up by the wind. I had to sail about a mile up wind past "Cow Pens" to "Red Backs"; it was a solid mast high wave top to bottom.

My first wave I drop into the pit and drove off the bottom. I looked to the lip, made my calculations and then smack it and slash off the top..........."The Brain smiles!!" This is action!! The waves were breaking in slow motion. Back in the line up, now I am trying to line up with Kenny on the Jet Ski. I drop in and glide off the bottom toward the lip, "Tears upon the brain!!"!! My timing is off and I get smacked. It's a long swim back to my equipment......" I am happy my equipment is in one piece, now I must respect these waves!!"

What a session. This is one of the biggest buried secrets of Barbados, "Cow Pens" And "Red Back" on the Northern coast of Barbados.

One of the other buried secret in Barbados is that the summer months of June and July are statistically the windiest and waves are consistently good too. The other great thing is that hotels and airfare are almost slashed in half. This is the perfect time to visit the island and enjoy the waves. I invite PWA world class ripper Klaas Voget from Germany and we encourage our clothing sponsor to do their photo shoot in Barbados. We need models, and local action girl Samantha delivers by being the star girl and pulling some her friends into deAction!! Little did we know, we would be spending most of our time taking scenic pictures. The most beautiful beaches in Barbados are along the East coast and my favourite is Bottom Bay, and this is the location of today's shoot. It is a picnic day, beautiful bodies which is a distraction from what we are paid to do, windsurf. As the day starts tapping off, and with a breeze, Klaas and myself desert the fashion photo shoot. Back on the South Coast, it time for some down the line wave action and "South Point" is delivering. It wasn't that big but a refreshing session.
